Standard Chartered has launched a cryptocurrency trading solution in the UAE, allowing affluent clients to trade Bitcoin and Ether directly through their bank accounts. This move marks the first time an international bank has offered such a service in the region, signaling a major shift in how traditional financial institutions integrate digital assets into core wealth management.

What was announced

The new service allows eligible professional investors in the UAE to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) without the need for external third-party platforms or separate digital wallets. By integrating the service into the bank’s existing ecosystem, Standard Chartered provides a closed-loop model where the bank manages end-to-end custody and settlement. This structure is designed to mitigate the operational risks often associated with third-party wallet providers while maintaining institutional-grade security safeguards.

The initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration between the bank’s Wealth and Retail Banking (WRB) and Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) divisions. It also leverages the technical capabilities of Zodia Markets, a firm backed by the bank’s innovation arm, SC Ventures. The service has received formal licensing approval from the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) in the UAE, ensuring it operates within a recognized regulatory framework.

While the initial rollout is restricted to professional investors within the UAE, the bank has indicated that the capability is part of a broader digital assets proposition. This ecosystem already includes access to cryptocurrency ETFs via its cash equities trading platform, as well as exposure through structured products and over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives. The UAE was selected as the launch site due to its established regulatory environment and its status as one of the bank’s four global wealth hubs. The bank has stated it intends to expand the offering to other markets over time.

"As client interest in digital assets continues to grow, this launch represents a significant milestone for Standard Chartered as we bring digital assets into our core wealth offering. With digital assets moving into mainstream wealth conversations, clients are increasingly looking not only for access, but also for the security, trust and confidence that comes from investing through a regulated and trusted institution. As a leading international wealth manager, we remain focused on delivering innovative solutions that help clients capture investment opportunities in a rapidly evolving market."

The companies involved

Standard Chartered is a major international banking group with a significant presence in emerging markets across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The bank has become a frequent subject of coverage in the fintech sector, with 137 stories documented by FF News regarding its digital transformation and market expansions. The UAE serves as a critical node in its global network, functioning as one of its four primary wealth hubs alongside Singapore, Hong Kong, and London.

The bank’s digital asset strategy is executed through a combination of its internal business units and its dedicated innovation and fintech investment arm, SC Ventures. This ecosystem includes specialized entities such as Zodia Markets and Libeara, which focus on institutional-grade digital asset infrastructure and tokenisation. By utilizing these internal and venture-backed resources, the bank maintains control over the technology stack required for digital asset custody and trading. This integrated approach allows the bank to bridge the gap between traditional finance and the evolving virtual asset market, positioning itself as a regulated intermediary for high-net-worth individuals seeking diversified portfolios.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Standard Chartered’s expansion into the digital asset space. Recently, the publication covered how Standard Chartered Launches Institutional Custody for Ripple USD (RLUSD) on XRP Ledger, demonstrating its commitment to stablecoin infrastructure. The bank also strengthened its leadership in this sector by naming Ying Ying Tan as Global Head of Securities Services and Digital Assets.

In the Middle East specifically, FF News reported on Zodia Custody Securing ADGM Approval to Launch Digital Securities Custody in Abu Dhabi, a move that laid the regulatory groundwork for the current trading launch. Furthermore, the bank’s involvement in broader financial infrastructure was highlighted when J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered Joined Partior for 24/7 Cross-Border Settlement, showcasing its role in modernizing global payment rails.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle by removing the "reputation barrier" that has historically kept many conservative high-net-worth investors away from cryptocurrency. By housing digital assets within a standard bank account, Standard Chartered is effectively commoditizing Bitcoin and Ether for the wealth management sector. This puts immediate pressure on other international giants like HSBC and Citi to accelerate their own digital asset roadmaps in the Middle East to remain competitive. The move also validates the UAE’s VARA framework as a viable model for institutional adoption. A key question for the industry now is whether this "closed-loop" banking model will eventually displace independent crypto exchanges for the affluent demographic.
