Ripple and BNY have expanded their strategic partnership to integrate XRP and the RLUSD stablecoin into BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform. For fintech professionals, this move signals a significant bridge between traditional custody and blockchain-native assets, moving beyond simple holding toward active institutional use cases like tokenized trade finance and collateral management.

What was announced

The expanded collaboration centers on the integration of XRP, the native asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), and Ripple’s stablecoin, RLUSD, into BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform. This platform is designed to provide institutional clients with secure digital asset custody within BNY’s existing governance, controls, and resiliency frameworks. BNY already serves as the primary reserve custodian for RLUSD and maintains an established custody relationship with Ripple Prime.

The partnership aims to move institutional digital asset usage from passive holding to active participation in capital markets. Specifically, BNY intends to allow eligible clients to mint and redeem RLUSD directly through its systems, facilitating more efficient payment and settlement workflows. BNY also intends to broaden its support for tokenized assets and investment products issued on the XRPL as institutional use cases for the ledger continue to develop.

A key pillar of the announcement is the exploration of tokenized trade finance on the XRPL. Ripple and BNY are launching a supply chain finance initiative alongside C2FO, a global working capital platform. This project seeks to use blockchain technology to digitally represent trade finance assets, such as receivables. By leveraging the XRPL’s fast settlement and low transaction costs, the initiative aims to broaden investor access to these assets while simplifying management and distribution. This marks a shift toward using stablecoins like RLUSD for the settlement of commercial activity and approved receivables, addressing what the companies describe as billions of dollars in commercial activity.

"We’re moving past the initial issuance of assets onchain – now, it’s all about making these tokenized assets usable for payments and collateral across financial markets,"

Monica Long, President of Ripple

The companies involved

Ripple is a provider of blockchain solutions for both traditional and digital finance, maintaining a significant presence in the market with its XRP Ledger technology. The company has become a central figure in the institutional adoption of digital assets, focusing on cross-border payments and liquidity. BNY, a global financial services company listed on the NYSE, operates as a major player in the custody and servicing space. With a history of managing vast amounts of traditional assets, BNY has increasingly moved into the digital space, developing platforms that bridge legacy financial systems with always-on blockchain technology.

C2FO is a global platform for working capital that provides businesses with control over their financial liquidity. By connecting buyers and suppliers, C2FO facilitates the financing of receivables. The company’s involvement in this collaboration brings a marketplace of established commercial activity and financing demand to the blockchain-based initiative. Together, these entities represent a cross-section of established banking infrastructure, blockchain innovation, and specialized fintech marketplaces, aiming to modernize how trade finance and digital assets interact within a regulated environment.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Ripple’s expansion into the stablecoin and institutional infrastructure sectors. Recently, the publication covered how Cross River and Ripple Partner to Integrate RLUSD Stablecoin into Core Banking Infrastructure, a move that mirrored the current BNY expansion by embedding digital assets into traditional banking cores. Earlier coverage also highlighted Ripple’s efforts to build global investing rails, such as when DriveWealth and Ripple Partner to Launch Blockchain-Powered Global Investing Rails. Additionally, the utility of RLUSD for real-world transactions was underscored in the report on how TrustLinq and Ripple Expand Partnership to Enable Direct RLUSD Fiat Payments Globally. These stories collectively demonstrate a broader trend of Ripple positioning RLUSD as a primary settlement asset for institutional financial services.

What this means

This announcement marks a transition in the digital asset sector from speculative holding to functional utility. By integrating XRP and RLUSD into the custody framework of a Tier-1 global bank like BNY, the industry is seeing the further institutionalization of the XRP Ledger. The move into tokenized trade finance is particularly significant; it targets a notoriously paper-heavy and opaque sector of finance, potentially forcing other major custodians to accelerate their own tokenization roadmaps to remain competitive. However, the success of this initiative depends on whether institutional investors are ready to treat tokenized receivables as a standard asset class, raising questions about the pace of regulatory clarity for on-chain collateral.
