Orbital’s latest research reveals that stablecoins outperformed leading fintechs in 30 out of 32 foreign exchange comparisons, matching the rates of institutional FX desks. For fintech professionals, this data quantifies the efficiency of stablecoins in cross-border payments while highlighting hidden costs, such as weekend liquidity premiums and de-pegging risks, that can erode expected savings.

What was announced

Orbital analyzed 27,057 quotes from 20 stablecoin liquidity providers across 52 currencies to determine the efficacy of digital assets in the foreign exchange market. Each quote was based on a $100,000 notional value and compared against two prominent fintech companies and one institutional FX desk. The findings indicate that stablecoins were cheaper than the fintech alternatives in the vast majority of comparisons, though they generally matched the rates offered by institutional desks.

The research highlights that savings are not uniform across all transaction types. For businesses holding USDT, paying out into local currencies proved more expensive than collecting funds in 15 of the 17 currencies analyzed, with costs rising by 10 to 21 basis points. On a standard $100,000 transaction, this represents an additional $100 to $210 in FX costs. Furthermore, liquidity providers showed significant volatility in pricing based on timing. Some providers doubled their charges during weekends or stopped quoting entirely. For example, Mexican peso conversion costs reached 2.6 times their weekday levels, while Japanese yen costs rose by 2.3 times. Canadian dollar and Norwegian krone costs also more than doubled during these periods.

Additionally, the study tracked USDT's median price over six months at $0.99922. This 0.08% discount against the US dollar means a business holding $1 million in USDT and valuing each token at parity could receive approximately $800 less than its recorded value when converting back into dollars, even before transaction fees are applied.

"Stablecoins can make cross-border payments cheaper, but the devil is in the details. Our research shows that the same payment can have very different economics depending on which way the money moves, who provides the liquidity and when the transaction takes place."

What this means

This research challenges the assumption that stablecoins are a universal "silver bullet" for cheap FX. While they clearly outmatch retail-focused fintechs, the parity with institutional desks suggests that for large-scale enterprises, the advantage lies in settlement speed rather than just raw cost. The significant "weekend premium" identified in the data puts pressure on liquidity providers to offer more consistent pricing if they want to capture traditional corporate treasury flows. It also raises questions about the hidden costs of de-pegging; even minor fluctuations can impact the bottom line of high-volume traders, necessitating more sophisticated hedging strategies within the digital asset space.
