Partior and NBB Partner to Explore On-Chain Bahraini Dinar Settlement
By Lauren Towner · 15 October 2026

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Partior to explore integrating the Bahraini Dinar into its blockchain-based settlement network. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant step in the expansion of real-time, multi-bank digital infrastructure into the Gulf region, potentially transforming cross-border liquidity and settlement efficiency.
What was announced
The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) and Partior have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to investigate the bank’s potential role as a Bahraini Dinar (BHD) settlement bank on the Partior network. This agreement establishes a formal framework for both organisations to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed operating model, technical feasibility, and implementation requirements necessary for such an integration.
The assessment will specifically focus on how a digital settlement model for the BHD could be developed within Bahrain’s existing financial services ecosystem, while adhering to all relevant regulatory requirements. Partior, which operates a production-live, multi-bank blockchain settlement network, aims to use this collaboration to expand its currency coverage and interoperability across global financial markets. The parties will determine how the proposed model can be developed to support the Kingdom’s financial services sector.
By exploring these new mechanisms for connectivity, NBB seeks to leverage its local market expertise to support emerging digital infrastructure. The initiative is designed to assess the potential value of 24/7 settlement capabilities for Bahrain’s banking and finance industry, focusing on enhancing the efficiency and transparency of cross-border flows. This move aligns with NBB’s broader strategy of strengthening its Transaction Banking capabilities through the adoption of emerging financial infrastructure and carefully selected partnerships.
"The way financial institutions settle money across markets is continuing to evolve, creating opportunities to examine new mechanisms for connectivity and settlement. Our engagement with Partior allows us to assess how NBB’s local market capabilities could support Bahraini Dinar settlement within an emerging digital infrastructure. We will approach this opportunity with the appropriate technical, operational and regulatory considerations as we determine its potential value for NBB and Bahrain’s banking and finance industry."

The companies involved
The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) is a cornerstone of the Kingdom’s financial sector, maintaining a significant presence in the local market while expanding its international connectivity. The bank has recently focused on modernising its transaction banking services and integrating with digital ecosystems to better serve its corporate and institutional clients within the Bahraini financial services landscape.
Partior is a production-live, multi-bank blockchain settlement network designed to address the challenges of cross-border payments and liquidity management. The company provides an "always-on" settlement infrastructure that enables financial institutions to move money across markets with greater speed and transparency. Partior has rapidly established itself as a key player in the digital assets and settlement space, attracting participation from some of the world’s largest financial institutions. The network’s expansion into the GCC region through this engagement with NBB reflects its strategy to increase the range of currencies available on its platform, thereby advancing interoperability between diverse financial markets. By providing a decentralised ledger for clearing and settlement, Partior aims to reduce the friction typically associated with traditional correspondent banking models.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the digital transformation of both organisations. Recently, NBB has been active in expanding its digital footprint, including a partnership to bridge traditional banking with global digital wallets via TerraPay. Additionally, the bank became the first anchor bank for Bahrain’s new Trade Finance Registry.
Partior has also seen significant momentum, with FF News reporting on its collaboration with LSEG DiSH to launch a 24/7 cross-border settlement network. This followed the major announcement that J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered joined Partior to facilitate always-on settlement, highlighting the network's growing influence among global Tier 1 banks.
What this means
This move signals a shift in how regional currencies like the Bahraini Dinar are positioned within the global digital economy. By exploring blockchain-based settlement, NBB is challenging the traditional, often slow, correspondent banking model that has long dominated the Middle East. For the wider industry, this puts pressure on other regional banks to adopt similar "always-on" infrastructures or risk being sidelined as liquidity moves toward more efficient, real-time platforms. The primary question remains how quickly local regulators can adapt to these decentralised models, as the success of such networks depends heavily on harmonised cross-border legal frameworks and technical standardisation across the GCC.
