Meritz Securities and the Canton Foundation have entered a strategic partnership to develop institutional asset tokenization in South Korea. This move signals a significant step toward integrating Korean capital markets with global digital asset infrastructure, utilizing privacy-enabled blockchain technology to mobilize tokenized assets as collateral within a tightening regulatory framework for Security Token Offerings (STOs).

What was announced

Meritz Securities and the Canton Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly evaluate domestic financial asset tokenization initiatives. The collaboration is designed to leverage the Canton Network’s privacy-enabled infrastructure to mobilize tokenized assets as institutional collateral. This work will be conducted within applicable regulatory frameworks as South Korea continues to refine its stance on digital assets. The partnership specifically targets cross-border applications, aiming to connect Korean financial products with global institutional markets. The organizations have stated that the scope of this collaboration will expand incrementally, synchronized with the evolution of Korea’s Security Token Offering (STO) regulatory environment.

The Canton Network, which serves as the technical backbone for this initiative, is an institutional public blockchain developed by the U.S.-based company Digital Asset. It is distinguished by its sub-transaction privacy protection, a feature critical for institutional compliance. Currently, the broader Canton ecosystem includes over 1,000 participating institutions. Within this network, 62 major organizations serve as Super Validators on the Canton Foundation's Global Synchronizer, providing the decentralized governance and validation necessary for large-scale financial operations. By combining Meritz Securities’ capital markets expertise with Canton’s global ecosystem of digital asset venues and market infrastructure providers, the initiative seeks to solve the technical and regulatory hurdles of cross-border asset mobility.

"Our collaboration with the Canton Foundation lays the groundwork for exploring how Korea’s capital markets can be linked with global digital asset infrastructure. As Korea’s regulatory framework takes shape, we will take a step-by-step approach to assessing how secure and efficient digital asset infrastructure can be put to use."

The companies involved

Meritz Securities is a prominent player in the Korean financial sector, known for its expertise in institutional financing and structured products. The firm has been actively preparing for the emergence of the Security Token Offering (STO) market in Korea, positioning itself as a bridge between traditional capital markets and the burgeoning digital asset space. Meritz has recently demonstrated a focus on technological integration, particularly in the realm of retail and institutional investment tools. The Canton Foundation oversees the Canton Network, a blockchain ecosystem specifically engineered for the needs of global finance. Developed by the U.S. blockchain firm Digital Asset, the network provides a privacy-centric environment where disparate financial systems can interoperate without compromising sensitive data. The Foundation manages the Global Synchronizer, which coordinates the network’s Super Validators. This infrastructure is designed to allow financial institutions to maintain control over their data while benefiting from the efficiencies of a shared ledger. The Foundation’s role is to foster a global ecosystem of financial institutions, market infrastructure providers, and digital asset venues, facilitating the movement of tokenized value across borders.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the expansion of the Canton Network within the Korean market. In October 2026, we reported that the Canton Foundation and LG CNS Partner to Drive Institutional Blockchain Adoption in Korea, an agreement aimed at accelerating the use of blockchain across the country's enterprise sector. This latest move with Meritz Securities suggests a deepening of Canton's footprint in the region’s financial services industry. Additionally, Meritz Securities has been active in modernizing its broader investment offerings. Earlier that same month, FF News covered how Webull and Meritz Securities Launch MOUM: AI-Powered Investing for South Korea. That launch highlighted Meritz's strategy of integrating advanced technology into its service suite to enhance the investment experience for South Korean users, a theme that continues with its current focus on asset tokenization.

What this means

The Korean market is rapidly becoming a primary testing ground for institutional blockchain applications, driven by a proactive regulatory approach to Security Token Offerings. This partnership highlights a critical industry shift: the move from isolated private blockchains to interoperable networks that prioritize privacy. For the broader fintech sector, the focus on collateral mobility is the real needle-mover. If tokenized assets can be seamlessly used as collateral across borders, it unlocks significant liquidity. However, the success of such initiatives remains tethered to regulatory harmony. The industry now faces the challenge of proving that privacy-enabled public blockchains can satisfy the stringent transparency requirements of national regulators while protecting institutional trade secrets.
