Press Release: Grayscale and Republic Partner to Expand Accredited Investor Access to Onchain Funds | Featured Image by FF News

Grayscale and Republic have entered a partnership to bring specialized digital asset investment products to accredited investors via Republic’s onchain platform. By lowering the entry point to a $2,500 minimum, the move signals a shift toward democratizing access to high-conviction crypto sectors like decentralized finance and AI infrastructure, which were previously the domain of institutional players.

What was announced

The partnership makes three specific Grayscale products available to eligible accredited investors: the Grayscale DeFi Fund (Ticker: DEFG), the Grayscale Decentralized AI Fund, and the Grayscale Data Network Trust. These funds target emerging sub-sectors of the blockchain ecosystem. The DeFi Fund offers a market-cap-weighted basket of protocols focused on core onchain financial services, including lending, trading, and asset management. The Decentralized AI Fund targets the intersection of blockchain and artificial intelligence, including decentralized compute, data storage, and AI services.

The Grayscale Data Network Trust provides exposure to $DATA, the native token of the DATA Network. This blockchain is designed to source, verify, and license data used to train artificial intelligence models, creating an onchain record of data provenance and compensation for rights holders. The collaboration is designed to provide a streamlined path for Republic’s user base to gain diversified exposure to these assets. Traditionally, such funds have been restricted to large-scale institutional investors, but this arrangement allows for a minimum investment of just $2,500. By utilizing Republic’s global investment platform, Grayscale aims to reach a broader audience of eligible investors who are looking for early-lifecycle exposure to these specialized digital asset strategies across decentralized finance and AI infrastructure.

"This partnership with Grayscale provides our Republic user base with a simple way to add diversified digital asset exposure to their portfolio early in the life cycle of these funds, a time traditionally limited to institutional investors, for a minimum investment of just $2,500."

The companies involved

Grayscale is recognized as the world’s largest digital asset-focused investment platform. For more than a decade, the firm has focused on creating investment vehicles that provide exposure to the digital economy, often acting as a bridge between traditional finance and the crypto market. It has pioneered several products that have become benchmarks for digital asset performance, maintaining a position at the forefront of digital asset innovation.

Republic operates as a leading onchain global investment platform, facilitating access to private market opportunities. The company significantly expanded its footprint in 2022 through the acquisition of Seedrs, a move intended to create the world’s first global private investment platform. This acquisition allowed Republic to integrate a major European crowdfunding player into its ecosystem, strengthening its ability to offer cross-border investment opportunities to a wider range of investors. Republic’s infrastructure is built to support a wide range of assets, from startups to digital tokens, focusing on providing retail and accredited investors with access to deals that were historically closed to the public. Together, these firms represent a significant intersection of established crypto asset management and modern onchain distribution.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Republic’s expansion into the global private investment space. In 2022, we reported that Republic Acquires Seedrs to create World’s First Global Private Investment Platform, a landmark deal that unified major investment communities across the US and UK. More recently, the platform has been active in hosting specialized campaigns, such as when TRADEFUNDED Launches Regulation Crowdfunding Campaign on Republic to Scale Futures Trader Certification.

Our coverage of the broader digital asset and wealth management sector includes the rebranding of Digital Ascension Group, which sought to unify wealth management with digital assets. Additionally, we have tracked the rise of retail-focused decentralized platforms, such as when Antarctic Exchange Secures $7M to Scale Retail-Focused Decentralized Perpetual Trading.

What this means

This partnership moves the needle by shifting the narrative of crypto investing from broad market exposure to sector-specific thematic investing. By packaging DeFi and AI protocols into accessible funds, Grayscale is challenging traditional asset managers who have been slow to offer granular onchain products. The $2,500 minimum investment significantly lowers the barrier for accredited individuals, putting pressure on legacy brokerage firms to provide similar transparency and ease of access. However, the move raises questions about how these early-stage, volatile assets will perform in a retail-adjacent environment. It remains to be seen if the market will favor these curated baskets over direct onchain participation.
