BNY and Citadel Securities Complete First Tokenized U.S. Treasury Triparty Repo Transaction
By Lauren Towner · 15 October 2026

BNY and Citadel Securities have completed the first-ever triparty repo transaction using a tokenized U.S. Treasury on a major platform. For fintech professionals, this marks a critical shift from theoretical blockchain use cases to practical, high-velocity institutional liquidity management, slashing settlement times from the standard T+1 to mere minutes within a live market environment.
What was announced
BNY (NYSE: BNY) has successfully executed a triparty repo workflow with Citadel Securities using a tokenized representation of a U.S. Treasury. This transaction represents the first time tokenized assets have been utilized on a major triparty repo platform, bridging the gap between digital asset technology and the world’s most liquid sovereign debt market. The process began with Citadel Securities purchasing a 2-year U.S. Treasury note through BNY on the Tradeweb platform. Immediately following execution, the security was recorded as a tokenized asset on BNY’s private digital ledger.
This allowed for settlement to occur within minutes, a significant acceleration compared to the standard T+1 settlement cycle typically required for such assets. Once settled, the tokenized Treasury was immediately deployed as collateral in an overnight triparty repo transaction, with BNY providing cash in return. The workflow demonstrates a connected digital lifecycle from trade execution through to short-term financing. BNY has indicated that it plans to introduce further digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support on-chain settlement. Additionally, the firm expects to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement platforms for Fed-eligible securities and U.S. triparty transactions, with the aim of reaching European and Asian trading hours within the next year.
"Efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets. We’re pleased to work with BNY on a practical use case that shows how tokenized U.S. Treasuries can move from settlement into financing more efficiently. By reducing friction across the trade lifecycle, innovations like this have the potential to improve how institutional markets operate."

The companies involved
BNY, a global financial services powerhouse, operates as a critical pillar of the global financial infrastructure. The firm serves as a leading settlement agent and collateral manager in the U.S. Treasury market, a position that places it at the center of institutional liquidity and short-term funding. With a history of managing vast volumes of traditional assets, BNY has increasingly focused on the integration of digital rails into its core clearance and collateral management businesses. Citadel Securities is a leading global market maker, providing liquidity to institutional and retail investors across a wide range of asset classes. The firm is known for its high-frequency trading capabilities and its role in ensuring market efficiency. By participating in this tokenized repo transaction, Citadel Securities is applying its operational expertise to the evolving digital asset landscape. Both companies are major players in the institutional space, and their collaboration on this project signals a move toward more continuous, "always-on" market structures. BNY’s role in this transaction leverages its existing trusted market structure while testing the limits of private ledger technology to reduce friction in the movement of high-quality collateral.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed the digital transformation efforts of both institutions. Recently, we covered how BNY Expands Digital Asset Custody Platform to European Institutions Under MiCA, highlighting the bank's strategy to provide regulated digital asset services across different jurisdictions as the regulatory landscape matures. This move into European custody complements their current efforts in U.S. Treasury tokenization. Furthermore, Citadel Securities has been active in forming strategic alliances to modernize market infrastructure, as seen when Citadel Securities and Wolfe Research Partner to Transform Institutional Equity Trading. These prior reports underscore a broader industry trend where established financial giants are partnering with specialized firms to integrate advanced technology into traditional trading and settlement workflows, moving away from legacy silos toward more integrated, real-time financial ecosystems.
What this means
This announcement moves the needle by proving that tokenization is no longer a sandbox experiment but a viable tool for the $5 trillion-plus triparty repo market. By compressing settlement from T+1 to minutes, BNY and Citadel Securities are challenging the fundamental latency of global finance. This puts immense pressure on legacy clearinghouses and smaller custodians who may lack the capital to build proprietary digital ledgers. The industry must now grapple with the "always-on" reality; if collateral can move instantly, the traditional concept of "market hours" becomes an artificial constraint. The primary open question is whether these private ledgers can eventually interoperate to prevent new digital liquidity silos from forming.
