State Street Elects Former AXA COO Alexander Vollert to Board of Directors
By Lauren Towner · 13 October 2026

State Street Corporation has elected Alexander Vollert to its Board of Directors, signaling a sharpened focus on large-scale technological transformation and artificial intelligence. Vollert’s background leading global operations for major insurers provides the institutional heavyweight with critical expertise as it seeks to modernize its massive custody and asset management infrastructure.
What was announced
State Street confirmed the appointment of Alexander Vollert to its Board of Directors, where he will specifically serve on the Board Technology and Operations Committee and the Risk Committee. Vollert arrives with over twenty years of experience in global financial services, most recently serving as Group Chief Operating Officer of AXA and Chief Executive Officer of AXA Group Operations. In these roles, he managed a workforce of approximately 10,000 employees across 18 countries, overseeing critical functions including data and artificial intelligence, IT strategy, delivery, and security.
His career includes significant leadership positions within the insurance sector, having served as Chief Executive Officer of AXA Germany and holding senior roles at Allianz, including Chief Executive Officer of its German property and casualty business. Vollert began his professional career at McKinsey & Company, where he advised asset managers and other financial services clients on strategy and transformation. He currently holds an independent director position on the board of Guidewire and serves on the management board of QuantCo. He holds a PhD and a master’s degree from the University of Karlsruhe. This leadership addition comes as State Street reports $57.9 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration and $6.3 trillion in assets under management as of June 30, 2026.
"Alexander has spent much of his career at the intersection of technology, operations and financial services. That experience will be particularly valuable as we continue to transform how State Street operates and scale the use of AI and technology across our business. He understands what it takes to turn technology into meaningful change across a large, global organization, and we look forward to the perspective he will bring to our Board."
Ronald P. O’Hanley, chairman and chief executive officer of State Street.
The companies involved
State Street Corporation, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as STT, is a dominant force in the institutional financial services sector. The company provides a comprehensive range of services, including investment servicing, management, research, and trading, primarily catering to institutional investors. With a global presence in over 100 geographic markets and a workforce of approximately 51,000 employees, the firm is a systemic pillar of the global back-office and middle-office infrastructure.
The corporation’s scale is significant, managing tens of trillions in assets under custody. Its leadership team, including Chairman and CEO Ronald P. O’Hanley and Independent Lead Director Sara Mathew, has navigated the firm through a period of intense digital competition. While the company is widely known by its primary brand, its historical and corporate identity is rooted in its role as a trusted partner for complex asset management and servicing needs. The addition of board members with deep expertise in non-banking financial operations, such as large-scale insurance, reflects the increasingly cross-disciplinary nature of modern fintech and institutional risk management.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has previously reported on State Street’s strategic shifts and technological expansions. In June 2026, the publication highlighted a State Street Study: 84% of Firms Target Individual Investors as Private Markets Democratize, which detailed the firm's focus on the evolving landscape of private asset classes. The company’s efforts to digitize its core services have also been a focus of coverage, particularly its partnership with Proxymity. In March 2025, Proxymity and State Street Expand Digital Proxy Voting to Germany was reported, following an earlier milestone where Proxymity and State Street go live with Vote Connect in Spain and Portugal in late 2023. These reports illustrate a persistent trend of the firm seeking to automate and modernize investor communications and voting across European jurisdictions.
What this means
The appointment of a Group COO from the insurance sector to a major bank’s board highlights a broader industry trend: the urgent need for "industrial-scale" technology leadership. Custody banks are no longer just balance-sheet businesses; they are data processors under pressure to integrate AI into legacy workflows. By bringing in Vollert, who has managed complex transformations across 18 countries, State Street is addressing the execution gap that often exists between digital strategy and operational reality. The move puts pressure on other global custodians to move beyond pilot programs and demonstrate that their technology stacks can handle the increasing complexity of democratized private markets and real-time settlement demands.
