Press Release: Equilend and Cboe Clear Europe Partner to Streamline Securities Lending Clearing | Featured Image by FF News

Equilend has integrated its trading and post-trade infrastructure with Cboe Clear Europe’s securities lending service, allowing market participants to access central clearing without the burden of building bespoke connectivity. This move streamlines the transition to cleared securities financing transactions (SFTs), offering fintech professionals a more capital-efficient path for European and U.S. equities, fixed income, and ETFs.

What was announced

The partnership bridges Equilend’s NGT trading platform and its comprehensive post-trade suite directly into Cboe Clear Europe’s central counterparty (CCP) framework. This integration covers the entire lifecycle of a cleared securities lending trade. Users can now submit trades for clearing at the point of execution via NGT or through existing post-trade workflows. The service supports a broad range of asset classes, including European and U.S. equities, fixed income, and ETFs, across more than 20 global Central Securities Depositories (CSDs).

Crucially, the connectivity is designed to fit into the legacy platforms clients already utilize, such as Equilend’s Spire and 1Source. By leveraging these existing operational processes, firms can avoid the high costs associated with new technology implementations. Cboe Clear Europe’s matching engine handles the reconciliation of both legs of the trade, allowing clients to select Equilend as a provider regardless of the specific counterparty. This follows Cboe Clear Europe's expansion of its SFT service, which debuted in 2025 for European equities and ETFs before adding fixed income and, most recently, U.S. equities. The shift toward CCP-cleared transactions is driven by the potential for more favorable capital treatment and improved risk management for both lenders and borrowers in the securities finance ecosystem. Additional asset classes are planned as part of future rollouts for the clearing service.

"The securities lending market has been moving toward clearing for some time, and the practical question for most participants has been how to get there without rebuilding their operational stack. This agreement with Cboe Clear Europe gives our clients a straightforward answer, clearing access through infrastructure they already have, with the flexibility to manage it at the point of trade or post-execution."

The companies involved

Equilend is a major player in the global securities finance market, providing a suite of trading, post-trade, and data services. The company is owned by the private equity firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe (WCAS), which acquired a majority stake to fuel its growth and technological evolution. Equilend has long positioned itself as a connective force in the industry, facilitating trillions of dollars in transactions through its NGT platform. The firm recently underwent a rebranding effort to reflect its role as a unified orchestration layer for the global market.

Cboe Clear Europe operates as a leading pan-European central counterparty, providing clearing services for a wide array of asset classes. It has been at the forefront of introducing central clearing to the securities financing transaction (SFT) space, a market historically dominated by bilateral agreements. By offering a cleared model, Cboe Clear Europe aims to reduce systemic risk and optimize capital usage for its members. The firm’s expansion into U.S. equities and fixed income markets highlights its strategy to provide a cross-border clearing solution that meets the diverse needs of global institutional participants.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of both entities as they modernize the securities finance landscape. In October 2026, we reported that Cboe Clear Europe Expands SFT Service to Include U.S. Equities Clearing, a pivotal step in its multi-asset strategy. This followed the firm’s earlier move in August 2026, when Cboe Clear Europe Expands SFT Clearing into Fixed Income Markets. Meanwhile, Equilend has been undergoing its own transformation; in September 2026, Equilend Rebrands and Launches Unified Orchestration Layer for Global Securities Finance, signaling a shift toward more integrated, automated workflows that align with the clearing capabilities announced today.

What this means

This integration signals a maturing of the securities lending market, where the bilateral-only era is under significant pressure from rising capital requirements. By removing the technical barrier to entry for central clearing, Equilend and Cboe Clear Europe are effectively forcing the hand of participants who have previously avoided CCPs due to high implementation costs. The move puts pressure on traditional prime brokers and agent lenders to justify bilateral costs against the capital efficiency of a cleared model. A major question remains: will the market see a liquidity split between cleared and uncleared pools, or will the ease of this integration trigger a wholesale migration to CCPs across the industry?
