DTCC Tokenization Service Goes Live: A Major Milestone for Institutional Digital Assets
By Lauren Towner · 28 October 2026

The Depository Trust Company (DTC) has launched its DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS), integrating tokenized securities into regulated financial market infrastructure. This move allows institutional investors to mint digital representations of real-world assets, facilitating faster collateral mobilization and access to new liquidity pools while maintaining the legal protections associated with traditional securities custody.
What was announced
The DTCC Tokenization Service (DTS) enables the creation of tokenized "digital twins" of real-world assets currently held within DTC’s $114 trillion custody environment. These tokenized representations are designed to retain the same ownership rights, investor protections, and economic entitlements as their traditional counterparts. The service allows eligible users to convert securities entitlements between traditional and tokenized forms, delivering them to digital wallets of their choice.
The platform operates on a multi-network, interoperable model, currently integrated with the Canton Network and a private Besu network. DTCC has indicated that additional blockchain networks will be added to the service in 2027. The initial rollout follows a December 2025 No-Action Letter from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which authorized the tokenization of Russell 1000 constituents, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking major indices, and U.S. Treasury securities.
To date, 20 DTC Participants have signed agreements to access the service, including Alpaca, Apex Clearing Corporation, Barclays, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, Brown Brothers Harriman, Citadel Securities, Citi, Clear Street, DriveWealth, Edward Jones, Fidelity Investments, Interchange Clearing, J.P. Morgan, Marex, Mirae Asset Securities (USA) Inc., Morgan Stanley, State Street, UBS and Velocity Capital LLC. The service was developed with input from more than 150 firms in the DTC Digital Assets Solutions Industry Working Group to ensure institutional-grade controls and governance.
The companies involved
The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is the primary post-trade market infrastructure for the global financial services industry. Through its subsidiary, the Depository Trust Company (DTC), it provides clearing, settlement, and information services for a vast array of asset classes. DTC acts as a central securities depository, managing the custody of over $114 trillion in assets, making it a cornerstone of the U.S. financial system's stability and efficiency.
The Canton Network is an interoperable blockchain network specifically designed for institutional finance. It provides the privacy and controls required by regulated entities while allowing for the synchronization of assets across different applications and institutions. By integrating DTS with Canton, DTCC is leveraging a network that has gained significant traction among global financial institutions seeking to move beyond isolated pilots into production-grade digital asset environments. This collaboration highlights a broader industry shift toward using specialized, permissioned ledgers that can handle the rigorous compliance and operational requirements of the traditional banking sector.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely tracked the evolution of DTCC’s digital asset strategy, recently reporting on how Ondo Finance and DTCC Bridge TradFi and DeFi via First Tokenized Fund Integration on Fund/SERV. This earlier move signaled the infrastructure provider's intent to bridge traditional fund services with decentralized finance. We have also covered broader industry shifts toward these technologies, such as when LSEG Scales Digital Assets Strategy as Super Validator on Canton Network, reinforcing the network's role in institutional tokenization.
Furthermore, our coverage of the U.S. market has highlighted the pressures facing clearing infrastructure, notably in Industry Braces for U.S. Treasury Central Clearing: New Survey Reveals Readiness Gaps and Rising Costs. The launch of DTS also aligns with international trends we identified in UK Financial Leaders Bet Big on Tokenisation as Tech Investment Surges, suggesting a global consensus on the utility of tokenized assets.
What this means
The launch of the DTCC Tokenization Service represents a definitive shift from the "proof of concept" era to the industrialization of digital assets. By providing a regulated bridge for $114 trillion in assets, DTCC is effectively addressing the primary barrier to institutional adoption: the lack of a trusted, central counterparty in the digital space. This puts significant pressure on smaller, niche tokenization platforms that lack the scale and regulatory backing of the DTC. However, the success of this initiative will depend on whether the industry can maintain liquidity across both traditional and tokenized formats without creating fragmented silos. It also raises questions about how quickly regulators will expand the scope of permitted assets beyond the initial SEC-approved list.
