Nordnet has officially launched operations in Germany, marking its first major expansion outside the Nordic region. This phased entry into Europe’s largest economy signals a significant shift for the digital bank, challenging established local neo-brokers with a combination of transparent flat-fee pricing and a massive integrated social investment community for retail traders.

What was announced

Nordnet’s entry into the German market begins on Monday 16 November, following a phased rollout strategy designed to refine the platform for local users. Initially, the service is available to early-access customers who have joined a waiting list that has been open on the company's German website since early October. This registration period will remain open until the beginning of January 2027, at which point the platform will undergo a full market launch.

The initial offering for early-access users includes a suite of essential investment tools, such as securities accounts, savings accounts, and trading capabilities for stocks, funds, and ETFs. A central feature of the launch is "Nordnet Social," a digital investment community with over 500,000 members, designed to help users share insights and investment strategies. By January 2027, Nordnet plans to make its website and mobile app available to the entire German market, at which point the product range will expand to include pension savings accounts.

Pricing for the new market is built on a flat-fee model of €2.95 per order for all securities transactions, a figure that covers all execution costs. Automated regular savings plans and all account types are provided free of charge. On the savings side, deposits earn a standard interest rate of 2 percent. However, Nordnet is offering incentives for early adopters: those who sign up before the January 2027 full launch will receive 12 months of commission-free trading and an enhanced 2.5 percent interest rate on savings for the first six months.

"Germany is the next logical step in Nordnet’s growth strategy. We want to empower and inspire savers in Germany to make better and more independent decisions about their financial future. To achieve this, we will provide them with the same comprehensive information, tools and market access normally reserved for professional investors"

Rasmus Järborg, CEO of Nordnet

The companies involved

Nordnet is a leading digital bank for savings and investments, traditionally operating across the Nordic markets of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. Operating as Nordnet Bank AB, the firm has positioned itself as a primary alternative to traditional retail banks by offering a tech-centric platform tailored for self-directed investors. The company’s business model focuses on democratising financial market access through high-quality digital tools and a transparent cost structure.

The expansion into Germany represents a significant scaling of the Stockholm-headquartered business into the DACH region. The German operations are led by Arno Walter, who serves as Country Manager for Nordnet Germany. By introducing its established social trading features and flat-fee brokerage model to a new geography, Nordnet aims to replicate the market-leading position it holds in Northern Europe. The firm’s platform is designed to cater to both novice savers and more experienced traders, providing a range of products from simple savings accounts to complex securities trading, all managed through a unified digital interface.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Nordnet’s strategic developments and its integration within the wider fintech ecosystem. In early 2023, we reported that Trustly partners with Nordnet, enabling easy and secure pay-ins for retail investors, a move that significantly improved the speed of funding accounts. We also covered the firm’s capital markets journey when Nordnet Published Prospectus, Applies for Admission to Trading on Nasdaq Stockholm. More recently, the bank has seen leadership changes in its home territory, as seen when Nordnet Appoints Gabrielle Hagman as New Country Manager Sweden. Additionally, the bank’s infrastructure has been used to bring institutional-grade services to the Nordics, such as when Citi Brings New Lending Opportunities to Sweden with Launch of Citi Securities Lending Access.

What this means

Nordnet’s arrival in Germany places it in direct competition with aggressive domestic neo-brokers like Trade Republic and Scalable Capital. While many competitors have pivoted toward zero-commission models or subscription tiers, Nordnet is betting on a transparent flat-fee structure and its established "Nordnet Social" community to differentiate itself. The decision to pursue a multi-year phased rollout suggests a cautious approach to the complex German regulatory and pension landscape. The real test will be whether a Nordic brand can successfully disrupt the loyalty German savers traditionally show to local Sparkassen and established digital players in a high-interest-rate environment where deposit rates are a primary battleground.
