Press Release: DefiLlama and Forgd Launch Universal Token Ratings to Standardize Crypto Market Transparency | Featured Image by FF News

Forgd and DefiLlama have launched Universal Token Ratings (UTR), a live scoring system designed to verify if a digital asset's market performance matches its public disclosures. For fintech professionals, this introduces a standardized, real-time credit-style rating to a market historically reliant on static whitepapers and self-reported data.

What was announced

The launch of Universal Token Ratings (UTR) establishes a new benchmark for digital asset transparency, providing a standardized 0–100 score and a corresponding AAA–CCC letter grade for over 100 token projects. Unlike traditional rating systems that rely on periodic reviews, UTR is updated continuously, reflecting shifts in liquidity, trading volume, and market maker behavior in near real-time. The tool is accessible directly via DefiLlama, serving as a public utility for founders, institutional investors, and researchers.

The rating is derived from a multiplicative formula (UTR = D × P) involving two distinct axes. The Disclosure Axis (D) evaluates the quality and freshness of a project’s reporting, including team leadership, tokenomics, legal structures, and service provider engagements. The Performance Axis (P) validates these claims by monitoring live market data, such as bid-ask spreads, exchange coverage, and on-chain token unlocks. By multiplying these scores, the system ensures that a project must excel in both transparency and market stability to achieve a high grade. The infrastructure behind the Performance Axis utilizes Forgd’s proprietary monitoring tools, which track more than 500 token projects and 35 market-making firms.

At launch, users can filter ratings by sector, valuation, and exchange listing tier. The system also accounts for the full lifecycle of an asset, providing provisional ratings at the Token Generation Event (TGE) that evolve as live operating history accumulates.

"Crypto has had transparency checklists, but the industry has never had a continuously updated rating system. Our rating tells you whether the market is functioning right now. Universal Token Ratings are designed so that a score is something you have to keep earning."

The companies involved

Forgd operates as a Web3 investment bank and advisory platform, specializing in the structural health of digital assets. The firm provides the underlying monitoring infrastructure for this initiative, drawing on data from hundreds of active token projects and dozens of market-making entities to ensure liquidity and disclosure standards are met. By positioning itself at the intersection of advisory and technical monitoring, Forgd aims to bridge the gap between traditional financial oversight and the decentralized market.

DefiLlama is widely recognized as the crypto industry's most utilized analytics platform. It serves as a primary source for decentralized finance (DeFi) data, tracking total value locked (TVL), volume, and protocol performance across the ecosystem. As an independent data aggregator, DefiLlama maintains a reputation for surfacing unbiased market information. Ryan Celaj serves as the Head of Research at DefiLlama, overseeing the platform's efforts to integrate live market metrics into actionable insights for the broader crypto community.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked the evolution of transparency tools within the digital asset space. In August 2026, we reported on the Forgd Launches Market Maker Leaderboard on DefiLlama to Enhance Crypto Liquidity Transparency, which laid the groundwork for monitoring service provider performance. Additionally, our coverage of the broader market, such as Tokenized Stock Trading Surges 140% as Retail Investors Dominate Market Activity, highlights the increasing demand for sophisticated data tools as retail and institutional participation in tokenized assets continues to grow.

What this means

The introduction of a multiplicative, real-time rating system puts significant pressure on token projects that have historically relied on "set and forget" disclosures. By linking a project's grade to live market maker adherence and on-chain events, Forgd and DefiLlama are effectively penalizing projects that suffer from liquidity gaps or opaque treasury movements, even if their marketing remains polished. This move signals a shift toward institutional-grade accountability in the Web3 sector. The industry must now grapple with whether a single, centralized score can truly capture the complexity of decentralized protocols, and whether other data aggregators will be forced to adopt similar quantitative standards to remain competitive.
