Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) has joined the Commercial Bank Money Token (CBMT) initiative, becoming the first Middle Eastern bank to enter the network. This expansion beyond Europe signals a major step in using distributed ledger technology for cross-border corporate payments and trade settlement, offering fintech professionals a glimpse into the future of regulated, tokenised commercial money.

What was announced

CBD is joining the CBMT Sandbox, supported by technical service providers UDPN and GFT. This initiative, spearheaded by Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft (DK), aims to bring commercial bank money onto digital rails using distributed ledger technology (DLT). The system allows banks to settle corporate payments in tokenised form while maintaining the essential safeguards of regulated bank deposits. CBD joins an existing roster of major European participant banks in the sandbox, including Commerzbank, DZ Bank, Helaba, UniCredit, ABN AMRO, BNP Paribas, and DNB.

The participation of CBD marks the first time a bank from outside Europe has joined the network, specifically targeting the Europe–Gulf trade corridor. The sandbox environment allows these institutions to explore several high-impact use cases, including cross-border corporate payments, trade settlement, cross-jurisdiction treasury operations, and working capital optimisation. By moving commercial bank money onto DLT, the initiative seeks to solve long-standing global challenges such as slow and costly cross-border corporate payments. The network was designed from its inception to be a multi-issuer, multi-currency, and multi-chain ecosystem, facilitating near real-time and transparent transactions for corporate and institutional clients.

"Joining CBMT is a natural next step in CBD’s digital transformation strategy and our long-standing role in connecting UAE businesses with international markets. As the first bank from outside Europe to participate, we bring the perspective of the Gulf’s banking and trade sector to a broader effort to modernise commercial bank money on a secure, regulated basis,"

Dr. Bernd van Linder, Chief Executive Officer, CBD

The companies involved

Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) is a leading financial institution in the United Arab Emirates, focusing on digital transformation and its role in connecting UAE businesses with international markets. GFT is a global technology partner with a significant footprint in the fintech sector, having been featured in 28 previous FF News reports. The company provides technical expertise for digital transformation and emerging technologies. UDPN (Universal Digital Payments Network) serves as a technical service provider alongside GFT for the CBMT Sandbox initiative.

The CBMT initiative itself was established by the German banking industry, represented by Die Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft (DK), to modernise commercial bank money. The project involves a working group of major European banks, including DZ BANK AG, where Claus George serves as Head of Digitalisation and Innovation TxB. These institutions are working to create a secure, regulated basis for tokenised finance. The expansion to include CBD represents a strategic move to bridge the European and Gulf banking sectors. This collaboration brings together traditional banking security with the efficiency of distributed ledger technology, aiming to provide a scalable solution for global corporate settlement.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of the Commercial Bank of Dubai and its partners. We previously reported on Commercial Bank of Dubai Becomes First Non-European Bank to Join CBMT Tokenized Money Initiative. CBD has also been active in the SME space, as seen when NEOPAY and CBD Partner to Unlock Working Capital Financing for UAE SMEs. Our coverage of GFT includes leadership changes such as when Andrew Nelson Appointed CEO of GFT UK, and their international expansion efforts like when GFT and Ozone API Partner to Guide Canadian Institutions Through Open Banking Transition. These stories highlight a consistent trend of digital innovation and strategic partnerships within the global financial ecosystem.

What this means

This move marks a pivot for tokenised commercial money from a regional European experiment to a potential global standard. By incorporating a Middle Eastern heavyweight like CBD, the CBMT initiative addresses the "walled garden" criticism often leveled at DLT projects. It puts pressure on traditional correspondent banking networks to justify their fees and settlement times. The focus on the Europe-Gulf corridor is strategic, targeting high-volume trade routes that have historically suffered from friction. However, the success of this expansion raises questions about how different regulatory jurisdictions will harmonise the treatment of tokenised deposits as the network moves beyond the sandbox environment.
